Sock Pattern

Diagonal Fixation Socks

By Lela Conrad

This pattern was originally developed in 1996 as a Christmas gift to the Knitlist.  The following pattern is designed for the use of Cascade/Obsession Fixation.  This yarn is cotton with enough spandex to give them enough stretch for comfortable wear.

The sock pattern as written will fit a woman’s shoe size 8 – 10.  Increasing of decreasing the length of the foot can vary the size.  Since the yarn is stretchy it easily accommodates various sizes.

Materials:  2 skeins Fixation/Obsession yarn.  Set of 4 pr 5 IS size double-pointed needles or 2 US size 3 circular needles (16 or 24 inch) to knit using the two-circular needle method of knitting socks.  Socks may also be knit with one 12-inch US size 3 circular needles and one set of US size 3 double-pointed needles used for finishing the toe.

Gauge:  One US size 4 needles—6.5 sts. Per inch.

Set Up:  If you are using double pointed needles you will find it easier to work with four needles.  Place 21 stitches on needle 1, 14 stitches on needle 2 and 21 stitches on needle 3.  If you are using two circular needles arrange as follows:  28 on one needle and 28 on the second needle.  This will make following the pattern much easier.  You may use any method you prefer to eliminate the hole that sometimes develops when knitting in the round is started.  The first and last stitches can be slipped over each other, making the first stitch the last stitch and the last stitch the first.  You can also CO one extra stitch and purl it together with the last stitch when joining the round.

Abbreviations:

*  K =  Knit

*  P  =  Purl

*  St  = Stitch

*  K2tog  = Knit 2 together

*  Tog  = Together

*  RS  = Right side

*  St St  = Stockinet stitch

*  WS  = Wrong Side

*  M1  = pick up horizontal thread between current stitch and next stitch and place on lefrt hand needle, knitting or purling that stitch through the back loop.   The picked up stitch can also be twisted before placing on needle and knitted or purled as usual.

*  SSK  = slip first stitch as if to knit, slip second stitch as to purl, placed slipped stitches back on left needle, knit the two together through the back loop.

*  PU  = pick up

Leg and instep pattern by rows:

The pattern is repeated five times around the sock and seven sets to heel.  It may be increased by one pattern without running out of yarn.  End pattern after row seven to accommodate for the short rowed heel.

*  Round 1:  (P2, K4, P1), repeat around to starting point

*  Round 2:  (P3, K3, P1)

*  Round 3:  (P1, K1, P2, K2, P1) repeat

*  Round 4:  (P1, K2, P 2, K1, P1) repeat

*  Round 5:  (P1, K3, P3) repeat

*  Round 6:  (P1, K4, P2) repeat

*  Round 7:  (P1, K5, P1) repeat

*  Round 8:  (P1, K5, P1) repeat

Instructions

Cast on 48 stitches, Rib (K2, P2) for 16 to 18 rows.

Increase 1 stitch by M1.  Purl this stitch.  It will be the first purl of row 1 in pattern.  Start pattern  (It is a repeat of 7 stitches)

Knit in pattern until 7 repeats of the 80row pattern are completed.  One more repeat may be knitted without  running out of yarn, if gauge is as or close to noted.

After you have the leg the length desired to the top of the heel, it is time to start knitting the heel.  I have changed the original pattern at this point to use the short-rowed heel described at The Fiber Gypsy’s Fiberlink.  This heel seems to work well with the Fixation  yarn.  However, a flap heel can be used if you prefer.  Check David Mackay’s Whipperoorwill Hill Page for other heel variations.

Turning Heel:  The heel is worked on 26 stitches.  When u sing two circular needles move the last stitch from the needle with the most stitches to the other needle.  You will now have 26 stitches on the needle for the heel.  Thanks to Jo Schubert for this excellent short-rowed heel.

When heel is finished:  Purl first two stitches from instep needle together on this next needle.  These will be the first purl of the pattern for the instep.  The pattern continues across the instep ending with last purl of pattern. There should be 21 stitches on this needle.  Move 1 stitch from each end of the bottom needle to each end of the instep needle—23 stitches on instep needle.  The balance of the stitches are in St St.  There should be 25 stitches on the other needle--(If you are using two circulars), otherwise the stitches may be divided over the needles in a manner that will help you keep track of the pattern and stitches.  The foot of the sock can also be knit plain if you desire.  Continue knitting the pattern over the instep starting the instep needle with a K1 then continuing in pattern and ending the needle with a K1.  Knit the sock until it has reached the base of the big toe (usually about 2 inches from finished length.  Start the decrease for the Toe.

Round 1 of Toe decreases:  Starting from the middle of the bottom of the foot, K to 3 stitches from end of needle, K2tog, K1.  Knit plain across the instep needle (no decreases).  At beginning of the next needle, K1, SSK.

Round 2:  Knit around

Round 3:  Knit to last three stitches of bottom needle, K2tog, K1.  Continuing to next needle, K1, SSK, Knit to last 3 stitches of instep needle, K2tog, K1.  Continuing to beginning of bottom needle—K1, SSK.

Continue rounds 2 and 3 until 7 stitches remain on each needle.  Graft (Kitchener) these stitches together.
